Milepost app icon — a wax-sealed envelope above a lantern-lit road at night

For iPhone · iOS 17 and later

A letter to your future self — delivered by your own steps.

Other letters wait for a date on the calendar. This one waits for you to arrive. Write it tonight, seal it, and it opens only after you have carried it the whole way — one mile for every 1,000 steps you walk.

One

Every step becomes its road, 1:1

1,000 steps carry your letter one mile. The rate is published inside the app and it does not change: no second currency, no inflation, no per-letter discount.

The one limit is stated out loud too — at most 30,000 steps count in a single day, and only so a misreading sensor cannot teleport a letter.

Two

It opens when you arrive, not when a clock says so

There is no timer, and no shortcut for sale. Walk the distance you chose and the letter opens. Stop, and it waits for you on the road.

Progress never expires, never resets and never goes backwards. A letter you left months ago carries on from the same mile.

Three

Your letters never leave your phone

No account, no sign-in, no server copy. The text, the recipient and every character you type stay in this app’s local database on your device.

The only thing Milepost ever sends is anonymous usage counts — on by default, switched off whenever you like, and never a word you wrote.

How a letter gets from tonight to the day it arrives

Three things happen while you go about your day.

A sealed letter walking a night road, day 7, 46.9 of 70 miles carried

1,000 steps = 1 mile

Choose how far this letter has to go. From then on your own walking is the only thing that moves it, and the app shows you the same arithmetic you could do in your head: today’s steps, today’s miles, the miles still left.

If steps cannot be read at all — you declined the permission, or the device has no sensor — the waystations carry the letter 3 miles a day instead. Far slower than walking, and said out loud rather than hidden.

A postcard brought back from the journey, stamped at milestone 3

Waystation postcards, never a reply

At a quarter, a half and three quarters of the way, a waystation hands your letter a postcard from the place it passed. Twelve exist and they collect in the Atlas.

Nobody writes back. Milepost never generates a reply and never imitates the person you wrote to. What comes back is the journey itself: postcards and a waystation stamp.

The journey lives on your lock screen

A Live Activity, the Dynamic Island and a home-screen widget keep the road in view: how far the letter has come, which waystation is next, and the miles you added today.

You never have to open the app to watch it move — though opening it once a week is what keeps iOS from dropping older step history.

Twelve postcards, all of them free

Every postcard and the whole Atlas are part of the free app. The twelfth belongs only to a letter whose entire road you finished.

What costs money, stated plainly

The four things this app exists for are free, and they stay free.
